Bursa Malaysia disposes of shares in CME Group for RM45m

Following the disposal, Bursa Malaysia is left with 104,250 shares in CME Group 


BURSA Malaysia Bhd has disposed of 50,000 shares of CME Group Inc (previously known as Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc) Class A common stock for US$18.86 million (RM44.94 million), it said in a filing last Friday. 

Bursa Malaysia said the shares were sold in three transactions on May 28, June 1 and Oct 21 in the open market on the Nasdaq Stock Market. 

“The proceeds from the disposal will be utilised to fund Bursa Malaysia’s initiatives to ensure continuous development to the ecosystem and infrastructure of the exchange,” the bourse said. 

CME Group offers the widest range of global benchmark products across all major asset classes, including futures and options based on interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, agriculture products and metals. 

Following the disposal, Bursa Malaysia is left with 104,250 shares in CME Group. 

According to the filing, CME Group shares were initially acquired by Bursa Malaysia in 2009 as a result of a prior corporate exercise between Bursa Malaysia, CME Group and CME Group Strategic Investment LLC. 

“Bursa Malaysia has maintained the CME Group shares acquired as part of its investment securities to fund a put option that was exercised in 2019. 

“Given the completion of the put option exercise on Dec 6, 2019, Bursa Malaysia has decided to dispose of the balance of the remaining shares to capitalise on the appreciating share price of CME Group,” it added. 

Bursa Malaysia’s shares closed unchanged at RM7.60, valuing the group at RM6.15 billion.
