TENAGA Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) Regulatory Period 3 (RP3), which is set to start on Jan 1, 2022, is expected to enable TNB to enhance its role in the National Recovery Plan including aspects of tariff review and capital expenditure for the next three years, in line with the country’s energy transition.

TNB is currently in a negotiation with the Energy Commission to finalise the RP3 under the Incentive-based Regulation mechanism.

This was briefed to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan during his first working visit to TNB headquarters in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, last week.

Takiyuddin confirmed his ministry’s support for TNB to accelerate the energy sector for the benefit of the country.

He reiterated TNB’s commitment to finding the best solution to balance the industry’s demands and fulfill its responsibility towards the rakyat and nation.

“I am proud and satisfied with the briefing on TNB’s future plans. We appreciate the huge contribution by the energy sector towards the benefit of the people,” he said in a statement last Friday.

“TNB has a huge social responsibility to give the best services to the people but it has to be able to balance certain planning aspects to ensure that they can fulfil the industry’s requirement and continue helping the nation.

“I am committed to ensuring this balance and give my support to TNB’s leadership to find the best solution in balancing the responsibilities,” he added.

During the visit, Takiyuddin was also briefed on the grid operation system and the 24-hour monitoring of reliable electricity supply to more than nine million customers in Peninsular Malaysia.

TNB president and CEO Datuk Baharin Din (picture) said the company has transformed from a provider of a vital service, namely energy, to one that is propelling the nation’s development and has the capacity to boost the economy.

“During the pandemic, TNB has provided electricity bill discounts totalling RM313 million for 2020 and 2021 for the people, apart from supporting various other initiatives such as the Bakul Prihatin Negara programme,” he said.

TNB’s other social responsibility activities included various vendor development programmes totalling RM12 billion from January 2018 to August 2021.

Meanwhile, the Tabung Warga TNB Prihatin had collected about RM3.3 million and had aided 5,729 recipients who were financially affected during the pandemic.
