THE construction sector has faced losses amounting to RM42 billion to date since the first Movement Control Order (MCO) was enforced in March 2020.

Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said of the total, RM18 billion was the estimated loss during MCO 3.0 which was enforced from June to September this year while the remaining RM24 billion was from MCO 1.0 last year which affected construction works from March until July 2020.

He said among the rise in cost that construction sectors had to face during the pandemic include materials and labour wage due to the lack of workforce.

“The smaller number of construction workforce is because the sector either had to wait for workers to be fully vaccinated or most of their employees were foreign workers that had gone back to their respective countries and were unable to return to Malaysia,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today in response to a question from Jerantut MP Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris.
