IPOH – Heavy rain last night triggered floods in three villages in Sungai Siput, north of here, causing 97 villagers to be evacuated to relief centres.

The floodwaters rose to almost one metre in Kampung Chior and Kampung Tok Sirat in Lasah and Kampung Lintang at about 8.30 pm, a spokesman of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement here today.

He said the relief centres were set up at Dewan Tok Sirat, Sekolah Kebangsaan Lasah and Dewan Kampung Lintang and that the people were moved out with the help of the fire-fighters and fellow villagers.

The floodwaters began to recede this morning after the rain stopped but the fire-fighters are continuing to monitor the situation regularly, he said.

Perak Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Transporation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun, who is the assemblymen for Lintang, visited the flood-hit villages this afternoon.
