THE Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) has announced a new package to help the teenagers and students to acquire Internet access, primarily for those coming from the underprivileged family to obtain affordable smart devices.
KKMM Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the ministry received feedback from the public regarding telecommunication services, especially addressing their wants for better connectivity and affordable prices.
“Many want better connectivity, affordable prices and better quality delivery especially during the period of Movement Control Order which saw a sharp increase in the use of the Internet for various purposes such as learning activities, e-commerce and even entertainment.
“The government has a responsibility to ensure everyone has access at an affordable cost to take advantage of the Internet and recently, I have met with telecommunication providers to discuss ways to help the people in the short term,” he said in a statement.
Under the Malaysian Family Youth Package which is available for teenagers, students up to post-graduate students, they need to pay only RM10 per month (which is amounted to RM30 for three months) to receive 20GB data for three months.
In addition, 1GB of data will be made free for daily productivity activities as well as basic Internet access without limit.
Annuar said with this package, users can perform activities such as delivery messaging and surfing the Internet.
“Whereas, for productivity, learning online as well as work from home activities can be done without data restrictions.
“Meanwhile, 20GB of data can be used for activities such as downloading videos or online games, which allows users to relax with the entertainment capacity,” he said.
He added that the package simplifies its use for teenagers and students, who are now no longer required to reload their credit every month for use.
“Adolescents and students under the age of 21 only need to register with MyKad while students over 21 years old need to register with a student card.
“The government hopes that this group can make use of facilities and facilitate learning and business their day,” he said.
Meanwhile, the government is also made aware that every family needs smart devices so as not to be left behind in the current age.
Therefore, a new package which allows them to own or upgrade their mobile device has been made available, called the Malaysia Family Device Package.
Annuar said the device can be owned with subscription as low as RM60 per month through a contract for 12 to 24 months subject to the type of device and service subscribed.
“This package includes 1GB of free data for productivity activities.
“Every user who is eligible can subscribe to up to two packages by registering under one identity card,” he said.
He added that it is hoped that more family members benefit from owning 4G mobile devices to complement their Internet experience.
The registration period for both packages start from Oct 15, 2021, until April 15, 2022.
Annuar said the government is confident that with these two packages, families will be able to enjoy better connectivity at an affordable price and quality delivery.
