Parliament transformation to focus on Parliamentary Services Act, new Act

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he is focusing on two main areas to strengthen the parliament, including to re-introduce the Parliamentary Service Act which will be more comprehensive to give independence to Parliament.

Secondly, Wan Junaidi said he is proposing to create a new act of parliament to replace The Houses ofParliament Privilege & Powers Act 1952 (revised 1988).

This is following his meeting with both Yang diPertua Dewan Negara YB Senator Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim and Yang di-Pertua Dewan Rakyat Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun last week to discuss on these matters.

“I am indeed happy that both Speakers are very positive with the proposal and have even given their commitment to take on the lead role in the transformation of our parliament,” Wan Junaidi said in a statement today.

“In line with this, we have also agreed to form a joint-committee between parliament and the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) to ensure that the various proposals discussed can be executed swiftly,” he added.

On his 100-days KPI, Wan Junaidi said apart from the parliament, he is also looking into the transformation in the government sector, as well as looking into the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63).

According to him, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had principally agreed for the ministry to look into these transformation plans. –TMR
