Sime Darby, Porsche deepen relationship with 1st assembly plant outside of Europe

SIME Darby Bhd would partner with Porsche AG to assemble sports cars for the Malaysian market only.

The group said Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd’s motor vehicle production and assembly facility would be the first assembly plant of the German sports car manufacturer outside of Europe, with production scheduled to begin in 2022.

Sime Darby group CEO Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson said the assembly portfolio is a key element in the company’s growth strategy, and now they are pleased to extend their relationship with Porsche from retail and distribution to include assembly.

“To be entrusted to assemble cars for one of the world’s most admired sports car brands speaks volumes of the highly qualified and competent Malaysian talent we have at Sime Darby and our ability to provide meaningful value to our partners,” he said in a statement today.

For the past 11 years, Sime Darby Motors, the group’s automotive arm, has been with Porsche in Malaysia as an exclusive distributor and retailer for the sports car brand.

Jeffri Salim said every Porsche car assembled by Sime Darby will go through the same rigorous standards and processes as its European counterparts, a shared commitment between the two parties.

He added that Sime Darby would continue to closely engage with Porsche to ensure standard compliance every step of the way.

Meanwhile, a member of the executive board for sales and marketing at Porsche, Detlev Von Platen said Malaysia and the whole Asean has great potential for the brand as it moves into a new era of mobility.

“This step now is part of a long-standing initiative to keep pace with rapidly evolving customer and market demands,” he said in the same statement.

Today, Sime Darby’s vehicle production and assembly facility has a highly skilled Malaysian workforce, delivering 17,141 high-value units in the financial year 2021.

Its assembly plant in Kedah assembles vehicles of various brands, including BMW, MINI, Land Rover, Hyundai and Mazda.

Sime Darby also partners with local vendors to provide seamless supply and production support.
