GEORGE TOWN – The Yang di-Pertua Negri of Penang Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak will officiate the opening of the  State Legislative Assembly which will be held physically next Monday.

Penang State Assembly speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang said the meeting to be conducted for nine days, involving 40 state assemblymen, would be conducted at the newly upgraded State Assembly Building at Jalan Light.

“We will abide by the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the National Security Council (MKN) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) where all assemblymen would be told to undergo COVID-19 screening before being allowed into the sitting,” he told Bernama when contacted here today.

He said the assembly sitting scheduled to begin with the opening speech by Tun Ahmad Fuzi on Aug 30, would last until Sept 8.

However, Law said the media’s presence would not be allowed this time with the exception of representatives from Buletin Mutiara, the state government’s monthly bulletin.

“In order to reduce risk of COVID-19 transmission only Buletin Mutiara is allowed to help cover and distribute news on the proceedings, while other media representatives may tune to the live streaming,” he said.

The last time the state assembly sitting was held physically was on Oct 12, 2020 which lasted six days but earlier this year, the state government replaced the state assembly session, which could not be held during the Emergency period, with a two-day informal engagement session in March at a hotel here.
