TNB expects 1.8m smart meter users by year-end

TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) expects that over 600,000 of its users will become smart meter users by the end of the year following the resumption of the smart meter installation project.

TNB advanced metering infrastructure project director Mohamed Ghous Ahmad said with the resumption of meter installation, which had to be postponed previously due to the Movement Control

Order 3.0, will increase to more than 1.8 million smart meter users by the end of 2021.

“The focus would be on ensuring that standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as social distancing and wearing face masks were adhered to at all times.

“The installation of smart meters at the beginning of this phase focuses on high-rise buildings that have building management in the Klang Valley and Cyberjaya to maintain social distancing to

curb the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that to ensure the safety of contractors and customers, the installation is made in compliance with strict SOPs set by the National Security Council.

The utility company is also committed to ensure that its frontline employees have received their vaccinations and as of Aug 22, 98% of its nearly 8,000 frontline employees have already received a full dose under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

The installation work resumed on Aug 1, 2021, following the permission of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources after its postponement during the total lockdown since June.

As of June 30, 2021, 1.22 million TNB customers have installed smart meters in the Klang Valley and Melaka.

Smart meter users can enjoy various advantages such as being able to monitor and control their electricity consumption via a combination of the myTNB portal and application, while over 60% of TNB smart meter users have already adopted the use of the application.

Users of the smart meter and myTNB can monitor usage patterns in ringgit or kilowatt-hours, view current usage notifications at the end of the billing cycle as well as the impact of energy consumption to the environment.
