Covid-19 cases on the rise with another day of over 17,000 cases

This is the 2nd consecutive days where cases remain above the 17,000-mark

THE Health Ministry (MoH) reported 17,150 new Covid-19 cases in the country yesterday, of which 17,149 were local transmissions and one import case.

The states and territory that reported four-digit daily cases include Selangor with 6,326 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,086 cases, Kedah (1,511), Johor (1,045) and Sabah (1,002).

Only Labuan reported single-digit cases with five whereas Perlis and Putrajaya reported double-digit cases with 21 and 72 cases, respectively.

The increase in the new cases brought Malaysia’s overall confirmed cases to at least 1.13 million. Currently, there were 195,273 active cases being treated at health facilities nationwide.

Among the active cases, 1,059 were placed in the intensive care unit with 531 of them requiring respiratory aid.

A total of 11,326 patients recovered, increasing the total recovered cases in the country to 925,965, which equals to 81.91%.

Some 160 deaths were reported, bringing the Covid-19 death toll to 9,184 or 0.81% of the total cases.

Meanwhile Bernama reported that Terengganu will add another Covid-19 Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) following a sharp increase of cases in the state.

State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Dr Alias Razak said the PKRC at the Sultan Mizan Teacher Education Institute in Besut will operate with a capacity of 392 beds.

“If the situation is still out of control, we plan to add two more PKRCs at Stadium Negeri in Kuala Terengganu (400 beds) and the Terengganu State Education Department Co-Curriculum Centre in Hulu Terengganu (350 beds),” he said.

Separately, Senior Foreign Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said several localities in Sabah and Terengganu will be under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from tomorrow until Aug 16, 2021.

The EMCO for Kampung Lepah and Kampung Alor Hijau in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, and in four localities in Sabah namely Ladang Agathis, Kalabakan; Kampung Nosoob, Panampang; Kampung Gusung, Likas; and Kampung Bakalau, Beaufort, will also be extended until Aug 13.

The minister also announced that the EMCO at several localities in Perak, Sabah and Pahang are lifted today.

Meanwhile, around 59 premises consisting of factories, business premises, construction sites and worker placement dormitories were ordered to close immediately due to violation of the standard operating procedures.
