GEORGE TOWN – Malaysians using the fast boat services in Penang will enjoy free rides from July 1 to Dec 31 this year as part of the state government’s effort to encourage people to use public transport and alleviate the burden of the people hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Penang Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the fee subsidy for the initiative involves an allocation of RM78,000 for 65,000 tickets per month or a total of RM468,000 for six months.
“The state government hopes that by funding the ferry fees in this critical time, it will at least help reduce the transportation cost for the pedestrians who are using public transport.
“They need only bring their MyKad and tap it at the scanning device made available at the jetty by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) before boarding,” he said.
On Jan 1, fast boat services were introduced to ferry pedestrian passengers between the island and the mainland, while the existing Penang ferry service can only be used by cyclists and motorcyclists.
