THE Ministry of Environment and Water will be implementing regulations in Water Services Industry Act (Desludging Services) 2021 to reduce water resource pollution.

In a statement, the ministry said all owners, management corporations or occupants of any premises connected to a septic tank or in possession of one must conduct desludging on a scheduled basis based on the gazetting of Water Services Industry Act (Desludging Services) 2021, which took effect on March 30, 2021.

“The scheduled desludging work will be carried out by Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK).

“To ensure that this new regulation can be implemented effectively, a notice to perform desludging work will be issued in stages to the owners of the premises beginning June 1, 2021,” it said.

According to the statement, the desludging for septic tanks within the operating area of the local authorities is scheduled for once every two years, while tanks located outside the boundaries of any local authority will be done once every three years.

Owners of septic tanks can also obtain responsive desludging services from IWK outside the scheduled period, if the tank requires the service sooner than the original scheduled date.

The Act followed the discovery that 90% of premises with septic tanks, in which there are 1.3 million of them, do not conduct regular desludging work, which results in pollution of the water sources.

The cleaning and maintenance of tanks is important to prevent the communities from being exposed to water-borne diseases, including cholera and hepatitis.
