Najib’s lawyer owes RM9.41m in tax arrears

THE Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has issued a lawsuit against lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah(picture) for alleged tax arrears of RM9.41 million.

The lawsuit, filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court stated that Shafee owed over five years’ worth of tax from 2011.

The board said in 2011, Shafee was bound to pay the government RM434,326.17.

The figures ballooned to RM978,854.11 in 2012, RM3.58 million in 2013, RM1.73 million in 2014 and RM1.82 million in 2016.

LHDN said notices of assessments for the five years were mailed to Shafee’s last known address in Kuala Lumpur on May 31, 2019.

However, the board said the notices were never returned to the department.

Shafee, who is representing former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak in all 1MDB-related cases, was previously slapped with four counts of money laundering involving a sum of RM9.5 million, purportedly from Najib, received seven years ago.
