UiTM Holdings expands RE business

UITM Holdings Sdn Bhd has signed a 21-year solar power purchase agreement (SPPA) with Ingress Technologies Sdn Bhd (ITSB) and Ingress Precision Sdn Bhd (IPSB) to expand its portfolio in renewable energy (RE).

UiTM Holdings chairman Datuk Md Zubir Ansori Yahya described the move as “timely” for the university’s investment arm as it is in line with the government’s target of generating 20% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

“It is hoped this project will be the first of many similar projects to be developed by the group where private SPPAs become more common and acceptance of green technology especially solar will ensure our growth in this sector,” he said.

Under the agreement, UiTM Energy & Facilities Sdn Bhd (UEFSB), a wholly-owned unit of UiTM, will invest and instal solar power-generating facilities with a total capacity of 897.26 kilowatts peak (kWp) and 1224.86kWp at IPSB and ITSB respectively.

The installation of solar power amenities allows IPSB and ITSB to significantly reduce their energy expenditure via the use of the Net Energy Metering scheme.

Ingress Corp Bhd group CEO and vice-chairman Datuk Dr Rameli Musa said cooperative partnerships will prepare the company to be more competitive and strengthen its ability to move forward as no single industry can address future sustainability challenges on their own.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has given a huge economic impact globally and Ingress is not spared from it. We take the opportunity of this situation to transform our organisation, processes and work culture. We have cultivated new norms in our business and operations, and they include this rooftop solar project,” he said.

The agreements were signed by UEFSB director Norzaimah Maarof, Rameli and IPSB chairman Datuk Dr Ab Wahab Ismail.

UiTM Holdings in November last year inked seven SPPAs to develop and supply a total of 11.057MW solar power generation facilities in seven UiTM campuses, namely in Dungun, Permatang Pauh, Jengka, Kuala Pulah, Alor Gajah, Segamat and Bertam.

The group is currently working towards implementing the Energy Optimisation and Solar Rooftop project at 35 UiTM campuses nationwide, which is expected for completion in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Upon the completion of the project, the university is expected to save up to 30% of its annual energy expenditure.

UiTM Holdings also owns a 50MW large scale solar (LSS) plant in Gambang, Pahang and a 25MW LSS plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor, both of which commenced operations on March 5, 2019, and Dec 2, 2020 respectively.

The total energy generation of 75MW alternating current from both plants is able to power over 33,000 homes and avoid 84,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

The two plants currently generate a total of 120,000MW hour of clean energy per annum and could yield RM965 million in revenue over 21 years.
