FORMER Axiata Group Bhd president and CEO Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim (picture) is making a return to the telecommunications group following his appointment as a member of the newly-established Axiata Advisory Panel (AAP).

In a statement today, Axiata said Jamaludin is one of two industry experts recognised for their extensive experience, knowledge and achievements in the industry. Joining Jamaludin as inaugural members of the panel is Gita Irawan Wirjawan, a former board member of Axiata Group’s Indonesian telco arm XL Axiata Tbk PT.

The AAP, in complementing the value, skill sets and experience of the board, serves to assist Axiata’s directors in assessing and understanding evolving key and complex issues relating to Axiata’s operations across its geographical footprint.

Axiata chairman Tan Sri Ghazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid said the board is honoured to welcome Jamaludin and Gita as members of the APP, fully recognising their perspectives, understanding and relationships fostered from decades of involvement and participation at the highest levels of corporate and public life.

“Jamaludin’s insights and guidance in the telco industry and digital economy is particularly opportune as Axiata makes headway in realising our ambitions to be the next generation digital champion. Exceedingly familiar with the group as a whole, the board is grateful to have Jamaludin return to the fold, to contribute to the company in this capacity,” he said.

Ghazzali said he also looked forward to seeking Gita’s advice and support primarily on matters relating to Axiata’s operations in Indonesia as the group navigates business, market, geopolitical and stakeholder relationships impacting one of Axiata’s core investments.

Axiata president and group CEO Datuk Izzaddin Idris said working alongside Jamaludin and Gita will ensure the group remains competitive, focused and visionary in how it charts its path forward.

“As we seek new growth opportunities and expand our business portfolio in high growth footprint markets and beyond, their unique insights and varied experiences bode well for the board and management in securing Axiata’s long-term growth,” he said.

Prior to his retirement on Dec 31 last year, Jamaludin helmed Axiata for over 12 years as its president and group CEO as well as took on numerous board positions within the group, chief among them as chairman of Celcom Axiata Bhd and a board member of PT XL Axiata in Indonesia.

In March 2020, Jamaludin was appointed by Prime Minister (PM) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as a member of the Economic Action Council. In November 2020, the PM also appointed him as a member of Malaysia’s Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council.

Gita, as former Minister of Trade for Indonesia in 2011 under the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had also taken on the role as chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board of Indonesia. He is currently the chairman of Ancora Group, a leading private equity firm which he founded in 2007 and heads the Badminton Association of Indonesia. – TMR
