Swiss Open: Three M’sian mixed pairs start on right footing

KUALA LUMPUR – Top seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (picture) were among three Malaysian mixed doubles pairs who won their opening round matches at the 2021 Swiss Open badminton tournament.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying fought for 53 minutes to overcome Thailand’s Nipitphon Phuangphuapet-Benyapa Aimsaard 21-15, 15-21, 21-19 at the St Jakobshalle, Basel.

In the second round, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallists will face France’s Ronan Albar-Anne Tran, who defeated Malaysians Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See 21-19, 21-17.

Another professional pair, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who were recently dropped by the Badminton Association of Malaysia, ousted French pair Eloi Adam-Margot Lambert 21-18, 21-14 to set up a clash against Rasmus Espersen-Christine Busch of Denmark.

Fourth seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing easily eliminated Indonesians Adnan Maulana-Mychelle Crhstine Bandaso 21-13, 21-12 in 28 minutes and will next face Germans Jones Ralfy Jansen-Kilasu Ostermeyer.

However, another Malaysian pair Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei were shown the exit by French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue 12-21-17-21.
