SHOPEE Malaysia recently had a record-breaking 12.12 Birthday Sale with over 875,000 items sold in Selangor alone within the first hour of Dec 12, according to Shopee regional MD Ian Ho (picture).

This included one Malaysian shopper who made 180 orders via the platform.

On a regional level, Shopee sold 12 million items in the first 24 minutes. Meanwhile, at its peak, one million items were bought in a single minute from a selection of over two billion products.

“This has been a record-breaking 12.12 Birthday Sale for us, especially since 2020 presented us with a whirlwind of challenges,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Ho said some of the best-selling categories included home and living, health and beauty, groceries, and mobile and accessories.

“For the home and living category, Shopee sold 1.2 million home improvement and decor items. Customers aged 35 to 49 purchased tools to spruce up their homes in preparation for the festive season which included 3D self-adhesive wallpaper, hotel-grade pillows, vinyl flooring and more,” he said.

The health and beauty segment was also a top seller as 628,000 skincare items were purchased with facial masks and lipsticks being the most popular among customers under the age of 34.

Groceries were also some of the most-bought items, with Milo selling 120 packs per minute on the morning of Dec 12.

“Many Malaysians took the opportunity to upgrade home appliances, gadgets and buy game consoles. Eight out of the top 10 per- forming Malaysian small and medium enterprises were electronic retailers who clocked in an average sale of over RM800,000 each,” Ho said.

He added that Shopee treated more than 50,000 Malaysians with the famous FamilyMart basque burnt cheesecake sofuto sundae through its Shopee Farm game.

The platform recently announced renewed efforts to drive traffic from its online platform to offline retailer physical stores.

Ho said a large number of people took advantage of the attractive food and beverage deals being offered.

“Businesses like FamilyMart sold close to 80,000 vouchers for various deals during the campaign,” he said.

Meanwhile, other data showed 450 million views recorded on Shopee Live across the entire 12.12 Campaign, while the platform’s in-app games were played a record 2.7 billion times.

The anticipation for the campaign also saw an increase of adoption in digital payments, with its mobile wallet, ShopeePay, recording a surge of 18 times in its usage.

Ho said e-commerce is proving itself to be an important part of people’s lives and the platform is glad to be on the forefront of this change.
