THE appointment of a third mentri besar (MB) since the 14th General Election (GE14) in May 2018 is not an achievement, but a reflection of failure among the political leaders, said the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

Sultan Nazrin said the politicians’ failure to gather solid support in ensuring a stable government will take a toll on the people’s wellbeing.

He said the latest political crisis, which began last Friday, was not a history that the country should be proud of, and the Sultan urged politicians to put a stop on acts that would cause instability to the state administration.

“Since the GE14, there have been three ceremonies for the appointment of the MB, something which had never happened in the previous terms of the State Legislative Assembly.

“But this is not a historical matter to be proud of; this will be recorded in history as a failure rather than success.

“It is a failure among political leaders in guaranteeing a consistent support so that we can focus on governing the state in the best interests of the people,” he said at the 14th Perak MB Appointment Ceremony at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

Earlier yesterday, Kota Tampan state assemblyman Datuk Saarani Mohamad was sworn in as the 14th MB before Sultan Nazrin.

The 59-year-old assemblyman, who is also the chairman of Perak Umno, had earlier received the full support of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) bloc in Perak, comprising Barisan Nasional, PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia — giving him a simple majority for the position.

Prior to Saarani’s appointment, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu was sworn in as Perak MB twice, first in May 2018 after GE14 under Pakatan Harapan (PH) and second in March 2020 under the PN government.

In his speech, Sultan Nazrin reminded the state leaders that the people have entrusted the elected representatives to assist them in improving their livelihood, in providing needs and services, help uplift their economic status and fulfil their social needs.

Sultan Nazrin said regardless of the representative, people of different races and faiths have the same needs, bear the same suffering, have the same hopes and need the same attention.

He added that a person’s true nature will be revealed when he is in the position of power and wealth.

He said this could lead a person to abandon his humility and turn arrogant.

“Changes in character occur more quickly when someone is surrounded by greedy people who only think of themselves, hypocritical, whisper words of praise with implicit intentions, and then abuse the relationship that they have with the leader.

“The higher the position of a human being, the farther his gaze is from the earth where his feet once stood,” the Sultan said.

In resolving the latest crisis, Sultan Nazrin thanked various parties including legal experts, government officials and individuals, as well as PN and PH leaders who had approached him to convey their suggestions, opinions and recommendations.

“All of them had the pure intentions to help so that the incident could be addressed accordingly. To all of them, I express my deep appreciation,” he added.
