A TOTAL of 109 companies who operate hotels, guesthouses, and other short-term accommodations have ceased operations as of October 31, 2020, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (picture).

She told Dewan Rakyat today that 77 of the companies had shut down voluntarily while 32 ceased operations due to court orders and a self-imposed wind-up.

For travel agencies, 57 companies have ceased their operations while 38 agencies were ordered to liquidate their businesses voluntarily as well as through court orders.

Meanwhile, 135 tourism-related companies have applied for license renewal between March 31 and October 31, 2020.

The tourism industry globally has been one of the hardest-hit industries by international travel restrictions as well as interstate travel.
