PROTON Holdings Bhd yesterday launched its highly anticipated SUV, the X50, starting at RM79,200.
The national carmaker said it will manage the waiting period and deliver to customers amid unprecedented interest in the new model.
“The amount of public interest in the Proton X50 has been unprecedented, especially during a year which has been affected by many external factors. We received inquiries from as far back as a year ago and thanks to frequent updates in the media, the level of expectation among Malaysian car buyers is high.
“The onus is therefore on Proton to keep waiting times manageable and to deliver a product that meets the technology, performance and quality expectations of our customers,” Proton Edar Sdn Bhd CEO Roslan Abdullah said in a statement following the virtual launch of the vehicle.
The SUV comes in four variants, namely the 1.5T Standard for RM79,200 in Peninsular Malaysia, 1.5T Executive (RM84,800), 1.5T Premium (RM93,200) and 1.5 TGDi Flagship (RM103,300).
In East Malaysia, the five-seaters are tagged at RM81,200, RM86,800, RM95,200 and RM105,300 respectively, or RM2,000 higher across the range.
These prices are on-the-road inclusive of the Penjana (short-term Economic Recovery Plan) sales tax subsidy.
Proton also offers a package of benefits to enhance the ownership experience, including a five-year unlimited mileage warranty and a five-year data package with 1GB of free data each month.
The first 30,000 customers to book by Dec 31, 2020, will also receive free labour charges for five service appointments, while all customers are offered a range of benefits if they insure their X50 via the Proton premium insurance coverage package.
Proton also provides low financing rates that start from 2.22% to all buyers via Proton’s in-house finance company, Proton Commerce Sdn Bhd.
“We are confident that customers will be pleased by the specifications, price and benefits package offered with the Proton X50.
“There is a variant to suit every need and budget, and we hope that just like the Proton X70, our new SUV will bring new customers to our showrooms,” Roslan said.
The X50 is the second vehicle to be jointly developed by Proton and its partner Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd.
To date, the vehicle has received over 20,000 bookings since the soft launch on Sept 16.
Proton said the X50 enables the company to compete in a new market segment, while it is also positioned against products that account for a substantial number of sales from buyers looking to upgrade from their first car.
Proton said staff in China and Malaysia have worked in cross-functional teams and conducted road testing for the X50, encompassing 1.9 million kilometres on Malaysian roads, to adapt to the hot and humid climate, and unique road conditions here.
Proton’s first B-segment SUV is manufactured at the company’s manufacturing hub in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
It would generate an annual purchase value of RM1.8 billion for Proton vendors, according to Proton chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar Syed Albar.
The X50 is said to be the first in its class with Level 2 autonomous driving in the local market because of its driving automation technological features.
The Standard model delivers 150PS and 226Nm of torque, while the X50 Flagship generates 177PS of power and 255Nm of torque.
