SIRIM Berhad (SIRIM) through its subsidiary, SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, has prepared testing and certification services for imported and locally produced face masks.
SIRIM QAS International chief executive officer Mohd Azanuddin Salleh said the testing and certification were to ensure that face masks met the determined standards as a guarantee to the public that the products’ quality was consistently maintained.
He said the testing and examination process of the face masks would be done in an accredited SIRIM lab equipped with the latest facilities.
“The testing and certification by SIRIM QAS International follows the BS EN 14683 international standard for medical face masks. The SIRIM testing process can also be used for three types of medical face masks.
“First, Type I that is used to reduce the risk of spreading infection during epidemics or pandemics. Second, Type II face masks used by medical experts in operation theatres or medical environments that has similar applications with Type I and Type IIR. The third is Type IIR, the same application used as with Type I with extra Splash Resistance (R) feature,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Azanuddin added that for non-medical face masks, SIRIM could test and accredit reusable face mask (cloth) and three-ply disposable face masks.
He said the testing process included the following aspects, Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE); Differential Pressure; Splash Resistance Pressure (Synthetic Blood); and Microbial Cleanliness (Bioburden).
“Face masks that meet the set standard will enable manufacturers and suppliers to differentiate their products in the market, thus promoting demand from consumers.
“SIRIM remains committed towards fostering Malaysians’ confidence through reliable service. In this challenging situation, we promise to continue our efforts to develop the country towards a safer future,” he said.
