MALAYAN Banking Bhd (Maybank) has appointed Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa (picture) as its chairman upon the retirement of Datuk Mohaiyani Shamsudin from the post on Nov 1, 2020.
In a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, the country’s largest banking group by assets noted that Zamzamzairani’s appointment will be effective from Nov 2, 2020.
“Zamzamzairani comes with an extensive understanding of the corporate sector and brings great insights particularly in the technology space, critical to Maybank’s future growth and success.
“The group looks forward to his guidance and leadership as we navigate through the challenging operating environment and continue with our growth agenda, with special focus on further strengthening our digital capabilities,” said Maybank group president and CEO Datuk Abdul Farid Alias.
Zamzamzairani, 60, was formerly the chairman of UEM Sunrise Bhd till July when he retired.
Zamzamzairani has more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, including in Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) where he served for 13 years before assuming key positions in several multinationals such as Global One Communications and Lucent Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
He returned to TM in 2005 as senior VP of group strategy and technology and was later promoted to CEO before being appointed as the group CEO and MD in April 2008 until his retirement on April 30, 2017, Maybank stated in a release yesterday.
Under his leadership, TM rolled out the high-speed broadband service in 2010 in a collaboration with the government, it noted.
Mohaiyani leaves the chairman post at Maybank after three and half years. She has a distinguished career having served at Amanah Chase Merchant Bank Bhd and Seagroatt & Campbell Securities Sdn Bhd before establishing her own stockbroking company, Mohaiyani Securities Sdn Bhd, in 1985 where she assumed the role of MD.
Zamzamzairani’s directorships in other public companies include Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications Engineering from Plymouth Polytechnic in the UK and completed the Corporate Finance, Strategies for Creating Shareholder Value programme at Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in the US.
He has also attended the Strategic Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School and the IMD CEO Roundtable at Lausanne, Switzerland in 2013.
