MERCEDES-BENZ Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MBM) yesterday launched the all-new GLB to continue capturing the rising demand for SUVs in the local market.
The German marque introduced the GLB in three engine variants — GLB 200 Progressive Line, GLB 250 4MATIC AMG Line and a variant from its performance division, the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4MATIC.
Filling the gap between the GLA and GLC SUVs, the new GLB is the eighth model in Mercedes’ compact car family, completing its premium SUV portfolio in Malaysia.
The GLB is the first compact SUV from Mercedes to offer a third row seating on request with two additional individual seats.
Globally, one in three Mercedes cars is now an SUV and one in four a compact model, thus a compact SUV like the GLB combines all the success factors of the company’s highest-volume segments.
MBM president and CEO Dr Claus Weidner said the company is excited to present the GLB as the SUV segment is a growing market in this region.
“The GLB is another true SUV from the Mercedes premium SUV range.
“That premium SUV model of Mercedes stands for all kinds of strength. It radiates confidence and power, while carrying the hallmark of luxury and exclusivity,” he said during the company’s first digital regional launch in South-East Asia.
The new GLB features boxy off-road design from the godfather of all SUVs, the iconic G-Class, and because of that the model is sometimes also called the “Baby G-Wagon”.
The GLB 200 is powered by a 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with the 7G-DCT seven-speed automatic transmission.
It develops 120kW (163hp) and a maximum torque of 250Nm, giving a zero-to-100kph time of 9.1 seconds.
The GLB 250 is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the 8G-DCT eight-speed automatic transmission.
The vehicle rates at 165kW (224hp) and produces a maximum torque of 350Nm, capable of accelerating from zero to 100kph in 6.9 seconds.
Meanwhile, the GLB 35 is powered by a turbocharged AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine combined with the AMG Speedshift 8G-DCT eight-speed automatic transmission and variable AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The performance SUV, which is the entry-level for AMG SUVs, develops 215kW (306hp) and a peak torque of 400Nm, allowing it to speed up from a standstill to 100kph in 5.2 seconds.
The GLB 200 is priced at RM269,118 on-the-road, excluding insurance, while the GLB 250 is tagged at RM318,009 and the GLB 35 comes at RM363,136.
