A TOTAL of 135 kindergartens and four childcare centres under the Community Development Department (KEMAS) in four districts in Kedah have been temporarily close, following the spread of COVID-19 involving the Sivagangga Cluster.
KEMAS director-general Datuk Mohd Yasid Bidin said of the total, 121 kindergartens and two childcare centres are in Kubang Pasu, eight kindergartens and two childcare centres (Padang Terap), one kindergarten (Kulim Bandar Baharu) and five kindergartens in Kuala Kedah.
“The closure involves 2,747 children and it is a preliminary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19.
“Disinfection works have also been conducted in all kindergartens and childcare centres according to the standard operating procedures set by the government,” he told a press conference after attending a programme to appreciate KEMAS volunteers who have helped prepare personal protective equipment (PPE) here today.
Also present was Negeri Sembilan KEMAS director Muhamad Abu Bakar.
Mohd Yasid said so far, no COVID-19 positive cases were recorded involving children at KEMAS kindergartens and childcare centres.
“In total, we have 800 kindergartens and childcare centres in Kedah,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mohd Yasid said some 88,210 sets of PPE were produced by 537 KEMAS staff and 1,006 volunteers nationwide since the implementation of the Movement Control Order on March 18 until today.
Of the total, he said 2,452 sets of PPE were produced in Negeri Sembilan.
