Maybank Islamic CEO wins Asia-Pacific Islamic Banker of The Year Award

THE Asset Triple A Awards 2020 has named Maybank Islamic Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Mohamed Rafique Merican (picture) as the Asia-Pacific Islamic Banker of The Year Award for his outstanding contribution to the Islamic finance industry.

Maybank Islamic also won four other awards namely the Islamic Bank of the Year in the following categories – Asia-Pacific, Malaysia and Singapore and also accorded the Best Retail Bank in Malaysia.

“The Banker of the Year recognition is awarded to an individual but the recognition and credit, beyond any doubts go to the team I have here in the Bank for this achievement. This is really a reflection of their hard work and commitment,”  he said in a statement.

He also attributed the success of the Maybank’s Islamic banking business to the strong and unwavering support from all sectors within the group.

Hong Kong-based financial magazine’s annual Triple A recognition represents the industry’s most prestigious awards for banking, finance, treasury and the capital markets.

Mohamed Rafique who became Maybank Islamic CEO in July 2016 is also Maybank Group’s CEO, Islamic Banking where his role encompasses leading the Group Islamic Banking’s franchise growth and regional expansion.

Last year in July, Maybank Islamic opened its first overseas branch in Dubai making it the first Malaysian Islamic bank to have a foreign presence.
