KNOWN for delivering innovative technology across various markets, which include marine, aviation, fitness, tracking, outdoor activities and mobile applications, Garmin Malaysia has broaden its solar charging technology to adventure smartwatches by expanding its Instinct, fenix 6 and 6S adventure line.

Aeco Technologies Sdn Bhd senior manager Ivan Ong said the new solar editions have a greater battery capacity and a new purpose-built functionality that will include mountain biking, surfing and climbing activities.

“The editions are packed with updated and unique features. It has new camouflage designs, supplementary activity profiles and now the watches can serve a wider range of athletes and adventurers,” he said.

The solar technology uses a cell that converts sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect and only requires a light-absorbing material in the battery structure for this.

Ong said one just has to expose the watch surface to light and it will automatically charge.

“If indoors, the brightness of the light source needs to be above 50,000 lux and it will reach the full solar energy intensity and achieve the advertised solar charging efficiency and power,” he said.

He said Garmin’s Instinct GPS adventure series has established itself as a watch tool built to endure the most challenging of environments, for everything from an urban city to the mountains.

“The Instinct Solar takes its reputation to a newer height with significant battery life and activity profiles, including a new activity-specific Instinct edition, the Instinct Solar Tactical Edition which provides increased GPS functionality while delivering over two months of battery life,” he said.

The Instinct Solar editions are available in graphite, tidal blue and sunburst, while the Instinct Solar Tactical editions come in black, moss and graphite camo, with prices beginning from RM1,999.

Meanwhile, the Garmin fenix 6S Pro Solar and fenix 6 Pro Solar are the latest members of the flagship outdoor GPS smartwatch line.

“These editions will harness the power of the sun to stay on and remain performance ready for weeks, so users can enjoy more activities, training features, onboard mapping and music streaming.

“The smaller sized fenix 6S Pro Solar adventure smartwatch will also feature an exclusive Women of Adventure design option,” Ong said.

Among the features available are a surf activity profile that tracks total waves, surf time, speed and the longest wave, as well as the mountain bike and indoor climb feature that tracks specified metrics to the sport.

The fenix 6 Pro Solar edition is available in black and cobalt blue, while the fenix 6S Pro Solar comes in light gold and purple where both editions are priced at RM4,199.
