Dorna Sports has yet to announce the status of MotoGP races in Malaysia, Argentina and Thailand
PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team (SRT) principal Datuk Razlan Razali (picture) hopes that the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) gets to be the venue for the final race of the 2020 MotoGP season.
Dorna Sports SL, which is the exclusive television and commercial rights holder of MotoGP, has yet to announce the status of MotoGP races in Malaysia, Argentina and Thailand after this season’s race schedule was revamped following the global pandemic.
“That is planned by Dorna (Sports). If Malaysia can host the MotoGP, then it will be the final round. It will be more interesting if it is held here (SIC) as our team is in the running to clinch the world title.
“My hope is that our riders can do something extraordinary. I believe SIC will do its best to ensure Malaysia can host the championship’s final round,” Razlan told Bernama yesterday.
The 2020 MotoGP Championship revved off with just the Moto2 and Moto3 categories in the Qatar Grand Prix (GP) in March before Dorna Sports decided to include the premier class MotoGP at the Spanish and Andalucia GPs.
In a separate note, the Petronas Yamaha SRT expects to know on Aug 23 whether or not seven-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi will sign for the outfit for next season.
Razlan said his team is in the middle of finalising a deal with Yamaha for the rider and the final decision should be known during the Styria GP in Austria.
“We want to observe more in the upcoming race (Czech Republic GP at the Brno Circuit on Aug 9). We know more or less what he is going through in the Yamaha team, which is carrying out major changes,” Razlan told local media.
Meanwhile, Razlan said they are trying to identify the cause of Franco Morbidelli’s bike’s engine problems during the Andalusia GP, forcing the Italian to forfeit the race with nine laps remaining. — Bernama
