THE Albukhary Group of Cos have come together to assist the country, including providing direct cash, medical equipment, vehicles, various forms of aid, key services and support to help Malaysia battle the coronavirus pandemic.

Albukhary Group said its relationship with Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd, a strategic partner of Proton Holdings Bhd, allowed for the sourcing of key medical equipment critically needed by Malaysian hospitals.

“This effort is also coordinated through Li Shufu Charity Foundation (LSCF) in China to contribute aid to various stakeholders in Malaysia.

“Some of the aids have been disbursed and deployed beginning last week,” the Albukhary Group said in a statement.

Two of the leading companies within the group, DRB-Hicom Bhd and MMC Corp Bhd, made a cash donation totalling RM2 million to the government’s Covid-19 Fund.

The donation was presented to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on March 24.

“Various companies within the Albukhary Group have come forward to provide a variety of aid, including medical equipment (ventilators, personal protective equipment and the like) to the Ministry of Health (MoH), as well as meals and food to government hospitals, media frontliners and university students.

“The group also loaned Proton X70 to the MoH to ferry healthcare personnel, and high-range drones to the Armed Forces for monitoring and surveillance purposes,” the Albukhary Group said.

The total value of the aid for both cash and in kind is estimated to be more than RM15 million.

According to the statement, the LSCF was set up by the founder and chairman of Geely Li Shufu in 2006. Geely became a strategic partner in Proton in 2018. The Chinese company acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton from DRB-Hicom.

Geely also had shareholding in carmakers in Europe and the foundation has also extended help to the continent which is among the worst hit regions currently.

“Specific to the global Covid-19 pandemic, LSCF has already extended relevant medical equipment to Europe to assist the region’s own war against Covid-19,” it said.

To assist Malaysia, LSCF and Geely are sourcing for ventilators to be used in MoH’s hospitals across the country.
