IN THE development of smart cities, the focus must be on creating high quality, safe and sustainable lifestyle, Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) deputy secretary general (policy) Datuk Dr Mary Wong Lai Lin said.
She said as smart cities offer the best solutions to managing the present and future generations, any planned development should identify issues and challenges that will be faced in making an impact and creating value for the community.
“Identify the components of a smart city that are essential which could be infrastructure, mobility, transportation issues, smart community and the environment.
“We want better quality of life, environmental sustainability, a safe environment and efficient town management, and if these are not taken into account, the public will not be able to see any difference as the situation will still be the same,” she said in her speech at the City LEAP Summit 2020 in Langkawi yesterday.
A total of 106 participants from 44 local authorities (PBT) nationwide attended the programme aimed at sharing knowledge and experience of smart city solutions, which have been implemented by TM ONE.
The programme is organised by TM ONE, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) Business and Public Sector Units in collaboration with KPKT.
Meanwhile, TM ONE VP and CEO Ahmad Taufek Omar (picture; left) said as the owner of the most extensive broadband network, including submarine cables, telecommunications towers, cloud computing and data centre, TM ONE is ever ready to collaborate with the local authorities.
“As proof of our ability in implementing smart city solutions, TM ONE has successfully implemented the solutions in several cities and towns around Malaysia, including Langkawi Municipal Council City of Tourism, Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Kota Baru Municipal Council, Sungai Petani Municipal Council and Pengerang Municipal Council.
“With the solutions already implemented after working with the municipal councils mentioned earlier, smart city projects can immediately be realised. TM ONE is in the middle of discussions with other local authorities to implement various smart city solutions,” he added.
Among the business solutions shared by TM ONE are smart traffic light, smart parking, smart safety and security, and smart travel solutions.
