DRB-Hicom Football Club (FC) or known as D’Greatbees secured the 2019 Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) Super League title after a pulsating final against Imigresen FC at the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Stadium in Cheras, KL, on Feb 25.

The match had to be decided by penalty kicks after the score was tied at 2-2 at the end of the official 90 minutes.

But D’Greatbees prevailed 4-3 during the penalty shootouts, sending jubilant celebration among the players, team officials and supporters at the stadium. The team is owned by conglomerate DRB-Hicom Bhd.

This was DRB-Hicom’s second consecutive title, after winning the 2018 KLFA Division One crown and subsequently, the team was promoted to the Super League. The team also won the 2009 FAM Cup when it was then known as Pos Malaysia FC.

Last Tuesday’s match saw DRB-Hicom threatening from the start but it was Imigresen who scored first. DRB-Hicom’s defence failed to clear the ball from the penalty box before Imigresen scored from a thundering volley. The scoreline remained 1-0 until halftime.

DRB-Hicom pressed for the equaliser from the start of the second half and was duly rewarded in the 53rd minute after an Imigresen player handled the ball in the penalty box. The referee pointed to the spot and DRB-Hicom scored to level the score.

In the 60th minute, DRB-Hicom took the lead after a deft header from a cross from the left flank failed to be saved by Imigresen’s goalkeeper.

But Imigresen piled on the pressure to seek the equaliser but poor finishing and structured defending by DRB-Hicom kept the score at 2-1.

Imigresen finally found the net in the 85th minute and level the scoreline. A bicycle kick from the edge of the box failed to be saved by the DRB-Hicom keeper.

And it was a tense final five minutes. DRB-Hicom nearly snatched a win when a shot in the final minute hit the post.

The game had to be decided on penalty kicks. Imigresen scored from the first kick but DRB-Hicom failed from the first spot-kick. However, DRB-Hicom scored all the remaining kicks while Imigresen ballooned one and missed another. The penalty shootout ended 4-3 with DRB-Hicom secured the title and an RM15,000 purse.

The match was the final game of KLFA’s 2019 season which was extended due to the bad weather late last year. Imigresen finished the league on top to qualify for the playoff semi-finals. They beat Tentera Darat FA to qualify for the final.

DRB-Hicom booked a place in the final after their opponents, CCCP FC failed to turn up for their semi-final match at Padang Persada PLUS on Jan 17.

It was a tremendous achievement for D’Greatbees and the team spirit shown throughout the challenging and long campaign.
