MALAYSIA’S national open golf tournament will be known as the Bandar Malaysia Open 2020 following the announcement of a new title sponsor for one of Asia’s oldest competitions.

The tournament, which has always been known as The Malaysian Open, is back this year after a four-year hiatus. Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor welcomed the new sponsor and hoped it would raise the profile of golf in Malaysia.

“We are delighted to welcome Bandar Malaysia as title sponsor to our prestigious national open,” he said at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam, Selangor, yesterday.

“It certainly adds prominence to this world-class professional event.”

Bandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd is the master developer of Bandar Malaysia, a mixed development project in Kuala Lumpur.

First held in 1962, The Malaysian Open is one of Asia’s most prestigious and historic golf tournaments. It was last held in 2015 with a purse of US$3 million (RM12.6 million).

The Bandar Malaysia Open 2020 will offer prize money totalling US$1 million and is co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour.

The event will be held at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club from March 5-8.

The tournament is going ahead despite current concerns over the Covid-19 situation, which has deferred the European Toursanctioned Maybank Championship 2020.

Mohd Anwar said the association was committed to the safety and health of players and spectators alike during the Bandar Malaysia Open and that preventive measures based on guidelines from the Health Ministry will be followed.

“Our concern is the health safety of our visitors during the tournament,” he said.
