Mercedes-AMG Petronas team seals trailblazing year with sixth win

PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) celebrated its sixth consecutive FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship (WCC) win in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month with both Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Add on Lewis’ sixth World Drivers’ Championship, it was a special season for Petronas and Mercedes as they wrote Formula One history together by winning a sixth consecutive Championship double – something no other team has done before in the 70-year-long history of the sport.

Mercedes’ success not only inspired the men and women of Petronas to continuously push the envelope for the next championship but it is also a true Malaysian success story.

Petronas President and Group CEO Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said winning six consecutive Constructors’ Championship is an outstanding demonstration of Shared Success as the title and technical partner to the Silver Arrows.

“We embrace technology as a key differentiator in our business to provide Petronas with a competitive edge and to unlock opportunities.

The successful partnership with Mercedes is a demonstration of this aspiration where we continue to support the team with innovative offerings through our Fluid Technology SolutionsTM,” he said in a statement.

In 10 seasons of the partnership, Petronas through its Fluid Technology SolutionsTM has powered Mercedes to a total of 93 Grand Prix victories in 197 races, taken 103 pole positions and lifted 194 trophies.

In the 2019 season alone, the team scored 15 victories, 32 podiums, 10 pole positions, 22 front row starts and 739 points.

Mercedes also lead 696 of the 1,262 race laps that made up the season, including every pre-season test, in-season test and all 21 race weekends, the team’s two cars racked up 7,813 laps of running – completing 382,789 gear changes and taking 128,791 corners in the process – thus underlining the reliability and capability of Petronas’ technology.

“On behalf of Petronas, I would like to congratulate the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport for its achievements, and we look forward to bringing greater value to the team as a progressive energy and solutions partner,” said Wan Zulkiflee.

During the celebration at the Petronas Twin Towers, the drivers expressed their gratitude to the Petronas staff for their contribution.

Lewis remarked that celebrating the win at the Petronas headquarters has become a great tradition.

“They are a very important part of the team, and we could not have done this without them. Together, we have achieved something that has never been done before.

“This incredible success is down to the hard work and dedication of every single member of our Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport family. Thanks to everyone at Petronas for your continuous support over the last 10 years. We will keep pushing next season and hope to elevate our game together again,” he added.

Meanwhile, Valtteri said the team’s 2019 car was a major factor to their success as well as declaring that this season was his best one in Formula One to date.

“The fuel and lubricants are the lifeblood of our car. I know that it’s not just our team-mates back at Brackley and Brixworth that are already working flat-out to find even more performance for next year’s car, it’s also a lot of colleagues here at Petronas who will unlock even more power for our 2020 car.

“I can’t wait to see what great solutions they will come up with. Today, we celebrate together, tomorrow, we will start preparing for a new battle again. I’m looking forward to another challenging fight next year,” he said.

Team principal and CEO of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Toto Wolff said no one would have imagined that the unprecedented success would be possible as the team’s accomplishments are incredibly difficult to achieve.

“Petronas has been our partner from day one – they have been by our side every step of the way, ever since we returned to F1 with our works team in 2010.

“We fight against extremely worthy opponents who are working 24/7 to try and beat us, so we need to raise the bar every single day to stay at the top. Petronas is always pushing the boundaries and works hand in hand with our technical team to extract as much performance as possible from our package. It makes me very proud to see what we have achieved together in the past 10 years, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us,” said Toto.
