THE 5G technology to be introduced in the country enables enhanced security monitoring in public places by the installation of high-tech surveillance cameras capable of recording in real-time.

The technology is currently being tested by telecommunications company Celcom Axiata Bhd, which has installed four cameras with artificial intelligence and video analytic functions at the focus areas on the resort island.

Celcom CEO Idham Nawawi (picture) said the cameras, capable of capturing 360-degree panoramic images with 4K resolution had been installed at Jalan Pantai Cenang and Dataran Cenang as part of the ongoing 5G demonstration project.

“The system is called ‘5G Safety and Security Smart City solution’ allowing real-time monitoring by the authorities.

“This technology will help authorities like the police and customs to carry out more effective monitoring and action can be taken more quickly in crime cases and so on,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Celcom is one of the telecommunications companies running the 5G technology demonstration project on the popular resort island.

Idham said the demonstration of the installation of the high-definition wireless cameras had also received the cooperation of the Langkawi Municipal Council, Langkawi Development Authority and Langkawi Police headquarters.

“When the security level in the tourist area is enhanced using this technology, it will indirectly increase tourists’ confidence to visit,” he said.

Elaborating further, Idham said the monitoring system would also promote tourist attractions.

“There are two screens installed at Celcom’s booth at Langkawi International Airport where the tourists can see what Cenang Beach will look like when they touch down at the airport,” he said.
