DUOPHARMA Biotech Bhd and KPJ Healthcare Bhd are collaborating to increase standard operating procedure (SOP) awareness among clinicians on the usage of SOP for halal pharmaceuticals.

Duopharma Biotech COO Wan Amir-Jeffery Wan Abdul Majid said the company has been working to raise awareness of halal pharmaceuticals among the general public and clinicians.

“Working with KPJ allows us to work with their patient pools within their group. At the moment, the main scope of the collaboration is to look into strengthening awareness of SOP and advice on how halal pharmaceuticals should work,” he said at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between Duopharma Biotech and KPJ in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Under the MoU, both parties will work closely in mutual areas of interest.

The firms will also collaborate to promote and create awareness of halal pharmaceuticals, as well as provide and establish clear guidelines on prescribing products, developing expertise and resources.

For Duopharma Biotech, the group will continue to intensify its focus on halal pharmaceuticals as it believes the demand for such products, which also helps to differentiate the company from other pharmaceutical firms, is growing.

The group is also focusing on expanding its factories in order to increase its shipments.

“Ninety-two percent of our current sales are local and 8% are exported. Ideally, we’d like to increase the percentage (of exports).

“Our current focus is on the Asean market, but we are also looking at the Middle East and South Africa,” group MD Leonard Ariff Abdul Shatar said.

Over RM100 million has been invested in the company’s factory expansion, he added.

Moving forward, part of the group’s growth strategy following its rebranding initiative includes the implementation of a corporate growth strategy.

This focuses on building a biosimilar portfolio of products starting with erythropoietin, which was co-developed with the group’s partner, Pangen Biotech Inc.

Leonard said the company will also commence operations of a highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredient facility to produce oncology drugs for the local and regional markets.

“One of our key strategies is to ensure accessibility to muchneeded drugs for cancer and other ailments.

“We have identified strong and proven technologies and partners to collaborate in delivering these products to the patients,” he said.

The global halal pharmaceutical industry is worth billions of dollars, with expenditures of US$75 billion (RM310.38 billion) in 2017.

It is expected to grow to an estimated US$132 billion by 2021, with Malaysia quickly becoming recognised as the leading global halal hub, as well as the global reference and trade centre for the mainstream halal industry.
