PROTON Holdings Bhd’s widely successful premium C-segment SUV, the X70, has been selected as one of the official vehicles of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020, or MyAPEC 2020.
CEO Dr Li Chunrong said in a statement yesterday that the national carmaker is proud to support Malaysia in hosting the year-long forum which promotes economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
“With its intelligent features, comfortable ride, refined interior and five-star Asean New Car Assessement Programme safety rating, we believe the Proton X70 is perfect for showcasing how cooperation between nations via forums such as APEC can help uplift each other, and thus raise the capabilities of entire industries and supporting ecosystems.
“During the year-long programme, Proton will also maintain the fleet through its industry-lea- ding network of 120 3S/4S outlets that will be in operation by the end of 2019,” he said.
Proton first launched X70 on Dec 12, 2018, and has become the company’s 2019 crowd-puller as it became the fastest-selling SUV in its class with no signs of subsiding.
As of November this year, more than 2,000 units of the X70 have been sold which elevated Proton’s status as an undeniable sales leader having entered a new segment with zero market experience.
Meanwhile, Malaysia will lead APEC’s efforts throughout the year to foster more inclusive and sustainable growth.
The country will be finalising the post-2020 vision for the forum, as well as hosting APEC’s 30 years as a leader of regional economic co-operation which enables growth.
Officials of 21 APEC economies will visit Malaysia throughout 2020 as committees and working groups to deliberate various issues towards regional economic integration.
An estimated figure of 16,000 coming include delegates from the US, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Vietnam.
Discussion on liberalising trade and investment will be reinforced by addressing issues on embracing digitalisation, increasing human resource development efforts, and strengthening women empowerment, among others.
According to data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, APEC member countries contributed 77.6% of total trade to Malaysia in 2018.
APEC 2020 is expected to keep the domestic economy vibrant through various events that will create jobs and showcasing industry opportunities.
