MENTERI Besar Selangor Inc (MBI Selangor), the investment arm of the state of Selangor, finalised three joint undertakings with foreign companies on the first day of the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) in Barcelona, Spain, last week.

The signing of both agreements, held at the Expo’s Smart Selangor Pavilion, were witnessed by Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari.

MBI Selangor CEO Raja Shahreen Raja Othman said the cooperation would help bring Selangor a step closer to becoming a premier smart state in Asean come 2025.

This is the first time ever that MBI Selangor inks three pacts at the same time within a day, lending credence to its effort and leading to acknowledgements from foreign companies and related authorities of Selangor’s pursuit to become a smart state.

The first cooperation, between Smartsel Sdn Bhd and Global- Reach Technology Ltd UK and Dune Global Sdn Bhd is to establish strategic alliance to maximise the latest in WiFi and hotspot technology and to promote “Hotspot 2.0” technology via Odyssys content platform to enrich the user experience.

Secondly, KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd and EVREKA’s (a content provider from Turkey) partnership is to provide one complete solution for the waste management and city cleaning operations with artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Lastly, the cooperation between Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) and KDEB Waste Management with Urbaser Ltd Spain & Mancuso Energy Sdn Bhd, which is a collaboration in relation to smart waste management solutions for the state of Selangor.

“Our challenge is to ensure the people of Selangor benefit from these partnerships and any similar joint efforts that we may have in the future,” said Raja Shahreen, adding that the joint undertakings run parallel to the country’s newly launched “Shared Prosperity Vision 2030”, a 10-year goal to restructure Malaysia’s low-skill labour-intensive economy to a knowledge-based economy.

“With the state already having a head start with ‘Smart Selangor’ initiative four years ago, we are ready to be part of the vision in ensuring benefits for all, be it in creating opportunities in business, work and education,” she said.

SCEWC which is organised annually in Barcelona marks the biggest gathering of stakeholders in the field of smart city development. The Expo brings together government authorities, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, thinkers, researchers and innovators to find solutions to urban issues as well as the creation of opportunities for joint ventures.

Smart Selangor Pavilion showcased participation from MBI Selangor subsidiaries namely KDEB Waste Management, SSDU Innovations Sdn Bhd, Smartsel and other state agencies including Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor- Selangor Industrial Corp and Central Spectrum (M) Sdn Bhd.
