IT WAS double joy for the Malaysian keglers after bagging the overall title and also the men’s overall category at the 25th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships which concluded in Kuwait on Wednesday.
National bowler Esther Cheah delivered the sixth gold medal for Malaysia after stunning defending champion, Jung Da-wun of South Korea, with 452 pinfalls against the latter’s 445, to win the women’s stepladder final which was telecast live via Astro Arena.
Earlier, Jung defeated her teammate, Baek Seung-ja, 245-244 in the semi-finals, while Cheah advanced straight into the final after topping the qualifying round.
Chinese kegler, Du Jian-chao clinched the men’s stepladder title after defeating Lin Pai-feng of Taiwan; 491-455 in the final, while Shusaku Asato of Japan, settled for bronze after losing to Du; 234-256 in the semi-finals.
Malaysia amassed six golds, one silver and four bronze medals, followed by South Korea in second (3-4-4), while China finished third (2-1-1).
Malaysia also won the men’s overall category after collecting three golds and one bronze, with Timmy Tan the best performer, clinching two golds through the men’s singles and the men’s All-Event.
The victory is a major boost for the national keglers ahead of the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines next month.
