FORMER Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) CEO Datuk Zahrah Abd Wahab Fenner (picture) claimed trial to 33 bribery charges involving more than RM5 million over contract and tender approvals, Bernama reported.
Zahrah was accused of receiving a total of RM5.703 million four years ago as an inducement in approving several SSM-led programmes and appointing companies for contracts.
The programmes involved were “Programme Online Networking Entrepreneurs SSM 2015 (ONE SSM)” and “Programme Karnival Youngpreneurs, Go!”.
These programmes were conducted in various locations nationwide.
Meanwhile, her son Abdulazeez Wan Ruslan was also charged on two counts of bribery and two counts of abetment with his mother involving RM160,000.
Zahrah pleaded not guilty to all charges that were read out by an interpreter before Judge Azura Alwi at the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Sessions Court yesterday.
Abdulazeez, who was separately charged at the same court, also pleaded not guilty.
Zahrah and her son were released on bail of RM300,000 with two sureties and RM70,000 with one surety respectively.
Their passpor ts have been impounded and they need to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s office in Putrajaya on the first week of every month until the trial is completed.
Deputy public prosecutor Allan Suman Pillai had previously asked for RM1 million bail for both accused and asked for a joint trial for the mother and son.
Lawyer Hamidi Mohd Noh, who represented both of the accused, did not object to a joint trial.
Hamidi said Zahrah retired this year and Abdulazeez had just gotten married.
According to the first 28 charges, Zahrah allegedly received RM5.2 million bribes from Ramulianto Mohram through Mohamad Shahren Mohamad Yusri.
In the 29th charge, Zahrah is accused of using her position to gain RM279,000 on behalf of her son Abdulazeez through Mohd Fadzly Abdul Hamid to implement projects including the “Healthy One di Karnival One” at Medan Mara, KL, with a RM555,000 quotation.
Another project was ONE SSM Sarawak 2016 which involved T-shirt supply contracts worth RM77,900, in which Abdulazeez had a direct interest in the programme.
In the 30th and 31st charges, the accused allegedly abetted Abdulazeez in his offence, where he received RM15,000 and RM70,000 for himself from Samhan Adnan.
In the 32nd and 33rd charges, Zahrah allegedly received RM25,000 and RM50,000 from Big Dataworks Sdn Bhd and Prima Arenaniaga Sdn Bhd for Skateboarding Development Malaysia Plt (SDM), a company owned by Abdulazeez.
For Abdulazeez, the first and second charges accused him of receiving RM15,000 and RM70,000 from Samhan, a director at Fixme Coach Sdn Bhd.
The sums were allegedly given as a reward after his mother approved for Fixme Coach to develop a website “Pembangunan Portal Online Networking Entrepreneurs (One Portal)”.
Abdulazeez’s third and fourth charges were for allegedly abetting his mother in her offence where she received RM25,000 and RM50,000 from Big Dataworks and Prima Arenaniaga for his company SDM.
The case is fixed for mention on Nov 26.
