SELANGOR midfielder Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zambri (picture) emerged as the team’s hero when his two goals enabled the Red Giants to advance to the semi-finals of Malaysia Cup after defeating Perak 3-1 in the second leg quarter-finals at Shah Alam Stadium, Selangor, last night.
The victory saw Selangor booting out defending champions, Perak, with a 3-2 aggregate and will face 2019 Super League champions, Johor Darul Ta’zim.
Mohd Khyril’s two goals came in the 45th and 67th minutes after Mohd Syazwan Zainon opened the score in the 33rd minute to put the squad under the guidance of head coach B Sathianathan ahead.
Pressured by the situation, The Bos Gaurus gained their composure to launch their attacks in the second half and Brendan Gan scored the sole goal for the hosts in the 83rd minute.
Meanwhile, 2016 champions, Kedah, notched a stylish victory at home by beating PKNP FC 4-1 at Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar to qualify for the semi-finals with a 6-2 aggregate.
The Red Hawks opened the score with Muhammad Farhan Roslan in the 24th minute and it was followed by Argentine import Jonathan Jesus Bauman, a minute later.
The team midfielder David Rowley blasted Kedah’s third goal in the 71st minute before PKNP FC’s Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi reducing the deficit in the 80th minute, but Mohammad Fayadh Mohd Zulkifli Amin completed the glorious evening for Kedah when he scored the fourth goal in the 90th minute.
Waiting for the team in the semi- final clash are four-time champions, Pahang, who beat Melaka 3-1, thus completing a 6-1 aggregate victory at Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan.
