Toyota unveils reborn Supra to local market

Japanese marque Toyota Motor Corp unveiled the reborn Supra to the local market, the first global model of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s GR sports car series.

The GR Supra returns to the global sports car market after production of the previous generation ceased 17 years ago in 2002.

Produced at the Magna Steyr, Graz plant in Austria, the all-new fifth-generation Supra shares the same platform with the BMW Z4 — the first product in a collaboration with the German automaker.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), the official local distributor of Toyota vehicles, offers the flagship sports car in a single variant namely the GR Supra GTS.

The vehicle is powered by a three-litre turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 250kW/340PS and a 500Nm peak torque.

The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car accelerates to 100kph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds, tuned by an eight-speed electronic automatic transmission.

“This is a sports car in its purest form, with no compromise,” UMWT deputy chairman Akio Takeyama said at the launch today.

Price for the Japanese icon starts from RM568,000 on-the-road without insurance.

Takeyama told The Malaysian Reserve in an interview recently that the company targets to sell 15 units of the GR Supra in 2019, depending on supply availability.

He also announced the rolling out of GR Garage in Malaysia — three in the Klang Valley and one each in the north and south parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

Malaysia will house the first GR Garage outside Japan.
