Syafiq, Dhabitah contribute last gold at 2019 Asian Diving Cup


THE pair of Muhd Syafiq Puteh and Nur Dhabitah Sabri (picture) presented the country’s last gold medal at the 2019 Asian Diving Cup when they emerged victorious in the mixed 3m event.

The Syafiq-Dhabitah team scored 286.56 points, beating Indonesian pair Andriyan Andriyan-Maria Natalie who obtained 226.62 points for the silver, while Tang Hio Fong-Choi Sut Kuan collected 182.25 points, contributing the bronze for Macau, China.

Earlier, two more national divers Hanis Nazirul Jaya Surya and Jellson Jabillin failed to secure a podium finish for the men’s 10m platform event after finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

In the event, Singaporean Jonathan Chan took home the gold medal with a 407.9-point, ahead of Chinese Wang Zewei who had to settle for silver with 393.45 points.

North Korea’s Ri Kwon-chok took the bronze with 347.25 points.

Following the win, Jonathan managed to secure a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Earlier, Malaysia secured another spot in the Olympics through Nur Dhabitah who won the women’s individual 3m gold medal.

The Asian Cup with participation from 11 countries ended yesterday with Malaysia topping the competition with six gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

China who sent three divers won three gold medals, while North Korea, Singapore and Japan each collected one gold.
