Dr M promises to restore Malaysia’s economic prowess

THE government is doubling its efforts to restore Malaysia’s position as an important economic axis in Asia, said Prime Minister (PM) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (picture).

In his congratulatory address and pledge of loyalty to Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Istana Negara yesterday, Dr Mahathir vowed to sustain efforts to rebuild the country and lead it towards a path of continued success.

The world’s oldest serving leader said the Pakatan Harapan government has shown strong commitment and achieved success stories since taking power a year ago despite its fiscal challenges.

“I will continue to ensure that Your Majesty’s government will not be at ease with its achievements thus far. Efforts will be doubled to revive Malaysia as an important economic axis in Asia,” he said.

Amid global economic uncertainties and geopolitical unrest, Dr Mahathir said a sense of unity will inject confidence and optimism into the nation to tackle the challenges ahead.

“I hope the people as a whole will continue to support the government in working together to overcome the challenges, and realise the plans and policies that have been devised to develop this beloved country of ours,” Dr Mahathir said.

He said the government will work hard to improve and implement programmes related to the wellbeing of the people, including efforts to reduce the high cost of living.

“National development will be meaningless if people continued to live in poverty and are excluded from the country’s opulence,” Dr Mahathir said, adding that the government is also committed to ensuring that no one is above the law.

“The federal government will continue to defend the (Federal) Constitution, the rule of law and democracy to ensure the stability of this country. Efforts to improve governance, integrity and eradicate corruption will continue to be taken against those involved in abuse of power.

“All these efforts prove that Your Majesty’s government is serious in dealing with problems that have long affected the wellbeing of the people and undermined the image of the country on the international stage,” he added.

On behalf of the nation, Dr Mahathir congratulated Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah as the Raja Permaisuri Agong.

The PM also expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V, for his reign as King until Jan 6 this year.
