Proton’s market share reaches 4-year high

PROTON Holdings Bhd achieved its widest market share of 18.1% in 47 months amid the dwindling market size of the local automotive industry.

The national carmaker said it sold 7,615 of Proton units last month alone, which saw its second-highest sales for this year.

“One month after setting a record last May, Proton continues its upward surge in 2019 by recording the highest market share figure since July 2015.

“The sales of 7,615 units for June is the second highest figure, garnering an 18.1% share of the Malaysia automotive market in a month when the total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have shrunk by 30.8% to 42,090 units,” it said in a statement yesterday.

As for last month’s delivery, Proton said it recorded 23% growth compared to June 2018, helping the company to secure high sales for the third consecutive month.

“There is a precipitous drop in numbers for the month following the festive period and June was no exception.

“Additionally, June 2018, was also the first month of the post-Goods and Services Tax (GST) tax holiday period, making it difficult for most automotive brands to post positive year-on-year sales growth numbers.

“However, Proton bucked the trend as our sales grew 23% compared to June last year, helping the national carmaker finish second in the sales table for the third consecutive month,” it said.

Proton added that its sales last month contributed to the overall growth of 61% for the first half of 2019, putting the company on track to achieve its sales targets for the year.

The carmaker also said its maiden sport utility vehicle (SUV) model, Proton X70, continues to be the selling point for the company with more than 15,000 units sold during the first half of the year.

“For the first six months, 15,175 units were delivered, making it the cumulative sales leader for the overall SUV segment, and at the same time, cemen-ting its position as the best-selling premium and executive SUV,” it said.

Proton added that its other model, Proton Saga, continues to grow with 2,541 units delivered in June, contributing to a volume growth of 27% higher than recorded in 2018.

“The other models, now updated with intelligent features, are performing equally well. The bookings for the new model of Proton Persona, Iriz and Exora have increased by an average of 108%, 180% and 135% respectively compared to their pre-update bookings,” it said.
