PROTON Holdings Bhd sold the highest number of cars in 46 months, delivering 10,611 units sold in May alone as the Proton-Zhejiang Geely Holdings Group Co Ltd partnership continues to gather pace and driving the company closer to its turnaround.

The carmaker sold 10,611 units in May, a 51.3% increase compared to the month earlier, as sales for the five months of the year exceed 70% compared to the same time period last year.

The company in a statement said its market share for the month is estimated to be at 17.2%, marking another high point for the company since January 2016.

The X70 SUV continues to drive sales at Proton, but the high number is helped by the acceptance for the facelifted Saga, Persona and Iriz which the company said had set new sales benchmarks for 2019.

The X70 is already the country’s bestselling SUV in April, and the renewed acceptance of Proton vehicles have helped the company to wrestle its position as the country’s second best-seller based on total industry volume (TIV).

Proton said the company delivered 2,439 units of the X70 in May. For the first five months, 13,572 units have been delivered to customers, making the model the market leader in its class.

Proton also sold 2,972 units of the Persona, while the Iriz (940 unit sales) by far posted its highest figure registered by the company in over two years.

The company said over 10,000 bookings have been received for the Persona and Iriz thus far.

Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong said the 70% increase in sales volume thus far this year showed that Proton is reaping some early rewards for its investment in products, people and sales outlets.

“The company is hopeful of finishing second overall in total sales for a second consecutive month, when overall industry sales figures are revealed by the Malaysian Automotive Association and we are confident of being able to maintain our strong sales performance for the rest of the year,” he said.

Proton will also focus on the sales of the Exora, besides continuing to grow sales for other models in the range.

“Proton’s strategy for the remainder of the year is to continue to grow our sales by introducing improvements to our current model range and improving our brand experience by opening more 3S/4S (sales, service and spare parts, and body and paint) outlets, as these efforts have obtained positive feedback from our customers.

“These efforts will help ensure Proton’s brand image is improved, as we continue to redefine our brand values in preparation for the introduction of yet more models that are jointly developed with Geely in the future,” he added.
