Meridian Bhd has launched its flagship project called the Malaysia Tourism City (MTC) at Kuala Linggi, Melaka.

In an exchange filing yesterday, the company noted the project’s land spans 251.76ha, and is to be developed into an integrated tourism destination.

Meridian ED Datuk Seth Yap said the ultimate goal for MTC is to increase the arrival of tourists and prolong the overnight stay.

“With MTC, we target to increase another two million arrivals and an additional 1.5 million overnight tourists in Melaka, thereby creating a multiplier effect on tourist receipt up to an additional RM5 billion per annum,” he said.

Inbound tourist arrival to Malaysia for 2018 was 28 million, of which 15 million arrived in Melaka, whereby an average of 1.5 million stayed overnight.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, who was also present for the officiation, said the new development would bring in greater tourists inflow, and encourages local businesses and employment opportunities. — TMR
