The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has confirmed the resignation of its chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail Razali effective April 15, 2019.

It was reported that Razali handed in his resignation letter two weeks before the end of his tenure, stating that he wanted to give the board more time to appoint a new chairman.

Suhakam said in a statement yesterday Razali held the position since June 2016 and had helped strengthen its public profile in various ways.

“This includes the accession to international treaties that would ensure that the protection of human rights would be embedded in the law.”

He also particularly showed dedication in advocating social and institutional changes for the protection of equality and justice for every Malaysian, regardless of race, religion or creed.

His past experiences include stints on the international stage and the United Nations (UN), as well as his work with society at large.

Razali began his career in 1962 with the Foreign Ministry and served in diplomatic corps for Malaysian missions in India, Poland, UK, France among others.

His role at the UN covered various capacities including as president of the General Assembly, developing positions on development, sustainability, governance, UN reforms, and on political security.
