Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MBM) sold 2,944 vehicles in the first quarter of 2019 (1Q19), slightly higher compared to 2,934 vehicles in 4Q18, but lower than 3,330 vehicles sold in 1Q18.

MBM president and CEO Dr Claus Weidner said new model introductions and seasonality allows the German automaker to remain as the main automotive premium brand in the country with a 2.4% market share.

“We started the year with the launch of five new models in 1Q19 — the E200 SportStyle Avantgarde, E00 Exclusive, E350 AMG Line, GLC 300 Coupe and GLE 450 AMG Line, thus reinforcing our position as the undisputed market leader in the Malaysian premium automotive market,” he said at the company’s 1Q19 results media briefing in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

MBM sales and marketing VP Mark Raine (picture) said the strong 1Q19 sales were partly due to the financing and comprehensive service packages offered, which led to its bestever sales in March with 1,334 vehicles sold.

MBM sold 1,714 limousines, 695 SUVs, 427 compact units and 108 dream cars in 1Q19.

Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s (MBSM) financing portfolio stood at over RM2.7 billion at the end of the period, with an increase of RM300 million on year-to-date growth.

The unit financed four out of five Mercedes vehicles sold and 50% of these were insured by MBSM.

Over 40,000 vehicles were serviced in 1Q19 — a 13% year-on-year increase — at MBM’s extensive network of 35 dedicated dealerships nationwide. Raine remains optimistic about the outlook for the luxury-car segment.

“The premium luxury market is holding its strength in general. I expect it to stay on the same level as last year,” he said.

The group yesterday launched the new Mercedes A-Class Limo, which comes in two variants.

The A200 Progressive Line is priced at RM229,888 while the A250 AMG Line is priced at RM267,888.

The A200 Progressive Line runs on a 1.4-litre turbo engine generating 163hp with 250Nm of torque, while the A250 AMG Line is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo engine, generating 224hp and 350Nm of torque.
