Noraini to be named new PAC chair

THE government is expected to announce Datuk Noraini Ahmad (picture) (Parit Sulong-Barisan Nasional [BN]) as the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) new chairperson next week.

PAC deputy chairman Wong Kah Woh (Ipoh Timur-Pakatan Harapan) said the motion to appoint a new chairman for the bipartisan parliamentary committee is expected to take place on April 11.

“This is however subject to the Speaker’s discretionary power to prioritise the motion.

“It all depends on the Speaker to decide, whether to give priority to this, looking at the appointment of a new chairman now being at item number nine, after all the government’s motions, therefore it is expected to be tabled next week,” he told reporters at Parliament lobby yesterday.

The appointment of a new PAC chairman falls as item No 9 under the government’s motions for this parliamentary sitting, and it is slated to be tabled by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“That the honorable Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad, Parit Sulong MP to be appointed to replace honorable Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee, Beluran MP as the chairman of PAC for the 14th Parliament,” the order paper read.

Speaking on the matter, Dr Mahathir said the delay in replacing the existing chairman is attributed to the failure of the Opposition to suggest a candidate at the time when Kiandee moved to Pakatan.

“We made a promise that we will have an Opposition member as head of PAC, but at the moment when Kiandee left Umno, we didn’t have a candidate, so he carried on (at that time),” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Dr Mahathir said a proposal will now be made as a suitable candidate has been found.

The proposal came after the bipartisan committee protested the government’s decision to maintain Kiandee as chairman, after the latter moved from BN to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, a Pakatan Harapan coalition member.
