Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) wholly owned subsidiary, TNB Research Sdn Bhd, plans to commercialise its research and innovation, and expand the value to the country’s energy sector.
TNB Research chief strategy officer Ir Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam said the organisation aims to create a multiplier commercialisation value from each ringgit the company spent in research and development (R&D).
Mohd Fadzil said TNB Research has spent RM120 million for R&D purposes and created a sixfold value in new products, new systems, and process optimisation and efficiency.
“We have collaborated with foreign parties from South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, for instance, to commercialise our products not just for TNB, but for the global market,” he said at the TNB Research Open Day 2019 in Kajang yesterday.
Deputy Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) Minister Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis officiated the ceremony.
She said TNB’s efforts are in line with the ministry’s agenda to empower innovation and increase commercialisation of R&D programmes.
Isnaraissah said Malaysia must drive its economy with innovation, creativity and high value-added activities to stay ahead of global competitions.
She said MESTECC has planned to place 100 researchers, who will still be paid by the government though work, in the industry.
TNB Research, which was incorporated in 1993, has various research units including forensics, environment, climate change and asset management.
The research arm of the country’s power company has developed technologies for utility and energy application such as mini floating solar and pico hydro for power generation in areas that are far from the national grid.
TNB Research also launched four books entitled “TNB Product Quality Assurance Policy”, “TenagaPRO: Technology Guidebook 2019”, “Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Project: Towards Conservation of Biodiversity” and “Program Pengurusan Bencana Empangan Berteraskan Komuniti Secara Bersepadu”.
The books highlighted TNB Research’s achievement in R&D and commercialisation efforts.
Isnaraissah and Mohd Fadzil presented the Anugerah Penghargaan Inovasi to entities that have supported TNB Research since its establishment.
