SalamWeb Technologies MY Sdn Bhd has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with University of Malaya (UM) to create and enhance an ethical online ecosystem that is aligned with Shariah principles.

The Islamic-based Internet suite of services said the five-year partnership with UM will provide opportunities for talent to explore industries with the Talent Development Programmes catering in the field of Islamic Digital Economy.

SalamWeb said it had invested RM250,000 for a year’s worth of joint research and development projects with UM.

Its MD Hasni Zarina Mohamed Khan said most people these days look for trustworthy online platforms, especially since the web could offer unknown predicaments in today’s age.

“We believe that UM will be the most potent university partners that will assist us in delivering a safer Internet browsing experience to the users out there,” she said in a statement.

SalamWeb, which is currently the world’s first Shariah-compliant browser, blocks harmful content and ensures privacy for users while browsing the Internet.

The app which includes news, messaging and other features are aimed at users in Malaysia and Indonesia.

It relies on community-vetted content filters that mark web pages as appropriate, neutral or inappropriate, while warning users when they approach sites with gambling or pornography.

The app also provides Muslim-specific functions like notifications for prayer times.

A similar MoU was signed in September 2018 with Universiti Teknologi MARA to promote a safer online environment for its students and staff, lasting three years.
